FORT WORTH -- The grandson of billionaire oil magnate T. Boone Pickens has died, according to Texas Christian University.
Thomas (Ty) Boone Pickens IV, 21, was a student at the university.
Fort Worth police responded to a call of a deceased person at 1800 Rogers Road, a few miles away from campus at mid-morning Tuesday. Pickens had already been rushed to Baylor All Saints Hospital at that point by a friend, according to neighbors at the apartment complex.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of this member of our community, and our hearts and thoughts are with Ty's family at this time," said TCU Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Kathy Cavins-Tull. "Staff members are available if students need to speak with someone about this sad news."
The Pickens family also released a statement through Jay Rosser, Vice President of Public Affairs for BP Capital:
"Ty’s loss at such a young age is an unspeakable family tragedy for the entire Pickens family and his many friends," the statement read. "We mourn his passing and respectfully request that the family be allowed to grieve in private in this time of sorrow."
Cece Williams, a fellow student who said she knew Pickens, was devastated by the news.
"He was always good to people...it's just a very hard day," she said.
The medical examiner has yet to determine a cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing.
