DALLAS — Police said a man was shot and wounded by officers Wednesday evening after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife.

The incident happened shortly after 9 o'clock near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Highway 175 as police responded to a theft report.

Two officers arrived to find the suspect and a security guard outside a liquor store. When the man failed to obey instructions and reached into his pocket, Senior Cpl. Joseph Bowling fired a Taser, knocking him to the ground.

Police said the suspect then pulled the Taser barbs out, brandished a knife, and ran down the street to a nearby check-cashing business, holding the door closed.

According to a police statement, the unnamed suspect initially refused orders to drop the knife and surrender; he then suddenly opened the door and lunged at Senior Cpl. Bowling.

Both Bowling and Officer Samantha Salazar fired their weapons in self-defense.

The suspect was listed in stable condition at Baylor University Medical Center. Neither officer was injured.

Police said a knife was recovered at the scene as evidence.
