DALLAS — Local food banks depend on donations to feed the hungry, and on Saturday, one agency received an overwhelming amount of groceries.
It's part of an annual event sponsored by state Sen. Royce West. Fifteen schools in his district pulled together for a food drive, and on Saturday afternoon, they delivered the donated items.
The North Texas Food Bank says it would not survive without community involvement like this.
"Every donation we receive is important to us," said Paul Wunderlich, the food bank's CEO. "We have less than a two-week supply of food quite often, and so we need all the food we can get to distribute to our agencies."
Wunderlich said every donated dollar — or five pounds of food — is equal to four meals.
The North Texas Food Bank received as much as 20,000 pounds of food on Saturday.
