MESQUITE — A family that fought for a way to honor those killed by drunk drivers now faces a second loss.

For two years, a memorial sign on LBJ Freeway in Mesquite honored Rachel Blasingame at the spot where a drunk driver killed the teenager in 2003.

But the sign has now been removed; the state permits such signs to be posted for two years.

"I've had people contacting me, saying that it means a lot," said Rachel's mother, Julie Blasingame. "I had an alcoholic contact me, e-mailed me, gave me letters and said, 'I don't want to drink any more because I see these things,' so it makes a difference."

The Blasingames now have possession of Rachel's sign.
