The day after Thanksgiving is still considered the official kickoff to the shopping season, and one of the biggest retail days of the year.

But Thanksgiving Day is taking a bite out of Black Friday sales, as some retailers opened their doors early.

Although there were no massive crowds, there was certainly brisk business in many stores at Mockingbird Station.

Several major retailers opened up on Thursday, hoping to capitalize on people who want to walk off calories -- and cash -- at their stores.

With door-buster deals promoted on Thanksgiving Thursday, shoppers happily scrambled to buy more at a Dallas Gap store.

"We bought a lot," one shopper said. "Look at all what we bought, for our daughters, and our sons, and our friends, and everything."

Consumer spending reports show sales of clothing and luxury goods weakened the first half of November. Last year's deep price cuts were primarily emergency discounts because of a poor economy. This year, some retailers just want to offer customers more time to spend.

"We've had such a really great response to some of the other holidays that we've been open, as far as Easter," said Heather Comtois at The Gap. "We had a really great response with shoppers."

For Yvette Morales and her daughter Sarah, Thanksgiving Day shopping is girl bonding time while the guys are at the football game.

"We just decided we'd rather spend $200 at the mall than $200 on a Cowboy ticket," Yvette Morales said.

As the savvy shoppers noted, the game is over in just a few hours, but a good coat lasts for years.
