PHOENIX — One priest was shot and killed and another injured at a Catholic church Wednesday night, a police spokesman said.

Police were responding to a burglary call shortly after 9 p.m. near 16th Avenue and Monroe Street at the Mother of Mercy Mission in the Capitol District, Sgt. Steve Martos said.

The second priest involved in the attack is in critical condition at a local hospital, according to police. His injuries are not known. It is not known if he was also shot.

Police located the assailant's car at 17th Avenue and Taylor Street, about four blocks north of the crime scene, Martos confirmed. It was spotted by KPNX-TV reporter Chris Williams, who alerted police.

The car was empty and Martos said the suspects are still at large.

No other information was immediately available.
