DALLAS — A man who was shot and killed during an apparent robbery early Wednesday morning had served the City of Dallas for 32 years.

Dallas police believe Joseph Nelson's killer was trying to steal his car.

Nelson, who was a resident of Lancaster, worked at four fire stations within Dallas Fire-Rescue during his career, and had been looking forward to retirement.

His body was found lying next to his Isuzu Rodeo in the 3300 block of Springview Avenue around 1:30 a.m. The vehicle was still running.

Nelson, 56,  had been shot once. He died at Baylor University Medical Center 30 minutes later.

Neighbors called police after hearing the gunshots, but no witnesses have stepped forward.

Nelson joined Dallas Fire-Rescue in 1977. He retired in November of last year.
