KAUFMAN COUNTY — The Texas Rangers are now investigating another deadly shooting in Kaufman County, and it involves county officials.

But this time, it's the suspect who is dead.

The incident happened around 10:30 Saturday morning in the Frog community between Terrell and Wills Point.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a report that a man was firing shots on County Road 316-A and threatening people. Investigators said he started firing at deputies when they arrived.

State troopers who were summoned as a backup also took fire.

"After that, I just heard rapid gunfire," said neighborhood resident Helen Peterson. "I had told my cousin to get down, because they live on [County Road] 316-B, to take cover, because we didn't know where this was coming from or what was going on."

Officers ultimately returned fire, and killed the suspect, whose name has not been released.

A few responding officers suffered minor injuries, but none of them was struck by gunfire.

Kaufman County prosecutor Mark Hasse was shot and killed as he walked work in downtown Kaufman on January 31. District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were slain at their home near Forney last month.

Former Justice of the Peace Eric Williams and his wife Kim are in custody, charged with those murders.
