DENTON — Amid the college football frenzy on Saturday afternoon, there was a solemn tribute at Fouts Field in Denton.
Before the University of North Texas game with Army, heroes from the Fort Hood massacre were honored with a moment of silence.
The military knows there would have been even more victims were it not for the bravery of the first responders and Good Samaritans who immediately began helping the dozens who were wounded.
"I drew blood on two people the day before, so I knew them," said Claudia Moore, a nurse at Fort Hood. "I recognized them, and the next day they were on the ground. It was like — this is not happening, this is not happening, because I saw them the day before, talked to them the day before."
The football game provided a welcome break from the grief back base, especially for soldiers like Alwood Mangum. "Feels great, feels great," he said. "People still care."
