COCKRELL HILL - A father of two young girls called police after a man broke into his Cockrell Hill apartment and attempted to abduct his daughters early Friday morning, read a statement released by police.

Authorities were called to the Cedar Square Apartments, located in the 500 block of Andrews Street, at about 5:15 a.m. Friday.

Jose Rojas told police the man broke into the apartment by crawling through his daughters' bedroom window. Two girls, ages five and nine, were asleep when the man crept inside their room. Police said the man attempted to get the girls to leave the residence with him, asking them to accompany him to the store.

One of the children was able to get away and woke their father, who chased the man out the front door and into the parking lot with a broom handle.

"I was sleeping when one of my kids woke me up and said there was a man in the house," Rojas said.  "I tried to catch him, but he got away."

The girls were taken to an area hospital as a precaution, but police said they were unharmed. According to investigators, the suspect touched one of the girls in a non-sexual manner and tried to kiss the other.

Police found a sweatshirt in a nearby parking lot and believe it may belong to the suspect.

The girls' father, who works as a maintenance man at the apartment, said he does not know the suspect .

A description of the suspect has not been released.
