DALLAS — A possible fuel leak may have spurred a fire that was spotted shooting from an engine of an American Airlines plane as it waited to take off on a runway Monday morning at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
According to Lynn Lunsford, a spokeswoman with the FAA, Flight 294, a Boeing 737, had made it to the runway for takeoff when a pilot on a different plane saw the flames. Fire crews were called to the runway to inspect the plane.
"There was no fire when they got there, but the trucks followed the plane back to the terminal," Lunsford said.
The spokeswoman said further inspection of the plane revealed a "possible fuel leak."
Flight 294 was scheduled to take off from D/FW Airport at 7 a.m. and land in Detroit at 10:30 a.m. A flight status update on the American Airlines' website estimated the plane would take off at 9:10 a.m. and land in Detroit at 12:37 p.m.
