DENTON — A DWI suspect was shot Wednesday afternoon as Denton County deputies attempted to take him into custody.

The Denton County Sheriff's Office said Alberto Guadalupe Contreras, 19, had been taken to Criminal Court 3 in Denton on Wednesday morning to face charges of driving while intoxicated, assault, and criminal mischief — among other charges.

But Contreras walked out of the courtroom while the baliff was in a holding cell with another prisoner.

At 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect was traced to the Denton Falls mobile home community in the 6600 block of Grissom Road, east of Denton.

A sheriff's office spokesperson said Contreras resisted arrest and shots were fired.

The suspect was wounded in the arm and taken to a hospital for treatment. No deputies were injured.

Contreras will be taken to the Denton County Jail to face additional charges after medical treatment is complete.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
