DENTON - As shoppers hit the stores in the coming days, police in Denton are warning people about a woman approaching people in parking lots.

The woman claims she is a psychic and can cleanse people of evil spirits, starting with their valuables. Investigators said she has already stolen tens of thousands of dollars.

The encounters have happened at random places. The victims tend to be the vulnerable.

"Who knows where she is doing harm to other people," said Crisoforo Santamaria.

Santamaria admits he's having bad luck. His wife is ill and work has been hard to find.

When a woman approached him claiming to be a fortune teller, he listened.

"And then she would say, 'I can cleanse your spirit. Let's start with your money and your valuables,'" said Capt. Lenn Carter, Denton Police Department.

Santamaria handed over his entire savings of $1,500. He also gave her jewelry, including his wedding ring.

When he went to the address she gave him the following day to pick it up the house was empty.

But, Santamaria isn't her only victim. Seven people have handed over more than $40,000 in cash, $22,000 in jewelry.

In all, $63,000 has been reportedly been taken by the woman this month alone.

"They were actually looking for some spiritual guidance from her and she took advantage of them," Carter said.

Victims knew the woman as "Victoria," and she appears to be in her 50s.

"The only thing I can do is ask God to give me energy so I can work and hope that this woman won't come around," Santamaria said.

Right now, investigators suspect other victims are out there.

News 8 called a number printed on a card she has handed out. Her voicemail box is full. The recording says it is Victoria Sanchez.

Police hope the public can help find her before she steals from others.
