DISD chief attempts to mend fences with board members

DALLAS — Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles dispatched a conciliatory e-mail message to the Board of Trustees before they met Saturday to discuss an investigation focusing on his performance.

Critics of the superintendent protested outside district headquarters Saturday demanding Miles' dismissal.

"It is time for the board to hold him to the same standards that he has held others to," said Jeffrey Muhammad. "We're urging the board to fire him, just as he has so impetuously fired or bullied into resigning the principals and teachers in this district."

Inside, trustees discussed the outcome of an outside investigation into the superintendent's conduct. It was a closed meeting, despite some objections from members of the panel.

"The public is aware of it, and paid $100,000," said District 6 Trustee Carla Ranger. "It would be prudent of the board to discuss the report in open session."

In that report, former U.S. Attorney Paul Coggins concluded that Miles violated board policy and his employment contract, but did not break any laws.

Miles did not attend Saturday's meeting, but News 8 has learned that Friday night the superintendent tried to smooth over his strained relationship with some trustees with an e-mail, which said, in part:

"I want you to know that I am prepared to reset my working relationship with the Board and move forward to help our students get the best education possible."

Board President Eric Cowan said trustees will meet with Miles Thursday in another closed-door session.

Last week, the head of Dallas' largest teachers union called on Miles to step down, but Miles this week insisted he was staying put.

"I hear a lot of people saying they love Mike Miles, and I hear some saying that they hate Mike Miles," said District 5 Trustee Lew Blackburn. "So now it's up to the board to decide what we're going to do for the district."

While no specifics were given, the board could look at disciplinary options for Miles that stop short of termination.
