It's been a particularly violent three days in the city of Dallas. Four shootings since Nov. 24 have claimed seven lives. Police say at least two of these, which occurred at motels a day apart and a block away in Far North Dallas, appear to be domestic.
Another that occurred in West Dallas near Love Field involved a drug transaction that ended with two deaths and one critical injury. The fourth, police say, involved a roommate who is accused of killing the man who she lived with at their Old East Dallas apartment.
That makes at least 20 murders so far this month alone and 140 on the year. To put that into perspective, there were 133 toal in 2011. However, the murder rate, calculated by finding the ratio between the number of homicides and the city's population, is currently projected to be lower than 2010's.
The city then recorded 148 murders for a .124 rate. Last year's, the lowest rate since 1957, was .109.
As noted by the department, just nine of the past 42 years have had fewer than 200 murders –– and the four lowest murder counts have come each of the past four years. In 2008, there were 170; in 2009, there were 166; in 2010, 148; and 133 in 2011.
The map below illustrates where these have occured this month and describes each incident using documents from the Dallas Police Department.
