CEDAR HILL — An eight-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after he disappeared under the water at a swim beach in Cedar Hill State Park Monday afternoon at Joe Pool Lake.
Aaron Starks, of Mesquite, was later pronounced dead at Charlton Methodist Hospital.
"His friend that he was with saw him go under," said Grand Prairie Fire Chief Robert Fite. "His friend ran up to the swim beach where his mother was; they called 911."
The child was under water for nearly 40 minutes before a dive team from the Grand Prairie Fire Department — assisted by personnel from three other agencies — found him in about five feet of water.
"He was very bad... in fact, he did not have a pulse. He was not breathing," Chief Fite said. "Our divers and dive team, along with police, we did CPR, got him to the ambulance, and they transported him."
The child was taken to Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas, where he was pronounced dead. The boy's identity was not released.
"It's crowded, it's a beautiful day in Grand Prairie," Chief Fite said. "We want people to be safe, but you know, when you put this many people in the water sometimes things happen, and that's why the dive team is here."
He said fire department divers will be at the lake every weekend through the summer trying to prevent drownings. Fite urged all swimmers to wear life jackets.
