Tarrant County College SE Campus
ARLINGTON -- Grand Prairie police shot and killed a shoplifting suspect Thursday afternoon in a parking lot of Tarrant County College's Southeast campus.
The situation started at a Target department store about 4:00 p.m. on the other side of Highway 360 in Grand Prairie.
Police said the store summoned officers for two men caught shoplifting.
"One of the suspects was taken into custody," said Sgt. Christopher Cook, Arlington Police. "The other suspect which was involved in this got into an altercation with officers at the Target."
The second suspect escaped custody and fled on foot across Highway 360 into Arlington.
Grand Prairie officers followed and caught up with the suspect again at the TCC Southeast campus in the 2100 block of Southeast Parkway.
"During this physical altercation," Sgt. Cook explained, "the suspect gained control of one of the officer's Tasers."
A veteran Grand Prairie policeman shot and killed the suspect, who was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office as 22-year-old Jordan Hatcher of Mansfield.
Police did not immediately detail what hatcher was accused of stealing, or whether he had any other weapons while fighting with police.
As investigators meticulously gathered clues in the crowded parking lot, TCC decided classes would continue inside.
Police from Arlington and Grand Prairie are conducting separate investigations.
Officers said detectives would likely be on scene through the early morning.
