Dallas police arrested a 23-year-old man for capital murder Friday for a January shooting that left one dead.

According to the arrest affidavit, on Jan. 8, 2013 at 2:53 a.m. Merced Alberto Perez Reyna and three others left Club Rio and stopped at the Mountain View Apartments in the 500 block of Staretta Lane because they were having car trouble.

The suspect, Jameal Lamont Reed, approached the group and offered to help. He returned with a cable, and Reyna approached him. Witnesses said they saw the two talking, then Reyna began handing his property to Reed, who was holding what one witness thought was a "play gun."

One of the other passengers attempted to defend Reyna and approached Reed with an iron rod, but Reed turned the gun towards the passenger, who took cover behind the vehicle with the other witnesses.

Moments later, a gunshot was heard and Reyna walked to the car, bleeding. He was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two witnesses at the apartment complex overheard Reed tell the group he was going to rob them, and the witnesses gave details only the murderer or a witness would know, according to police. The witness' statements corroborated the physical evidence found at the crime scene.

Reed is in Lew Sterett Jail, being held on $500,000 bond.
