WACO - Former President George W. Bush is lending his name to a good cause this weekend.
The cause is one he's hoping will raise millions for the families of American war casualties. It's all a part of Patriot Golf Day weekend, which allows Bush to help while doing one of his favorite things.
During his presidency, Bush gave up golf, saying it sent the wrong signal to play during a war. But, Friday, he played to support the troops and for guys like Heath Calhoun, who lost both legs in Iraq in 2003. He picked up golf after he learned to walk on prosthetic legs.
Together, Bush and Calhoun played in Waco to kick off Patriot Golf weekend, which benefits The Folds of Honor Foundation. The foundation was founded by an F-16 fighter pilot from Oklahoma and funds scholarships for the families of those killed and wounded.
"We've raised $5.3 million in the last three years," said Major Dan Rooney, with the Oklahoma Air National Guard.
Through Labor Day, golfers at 4,500 courses nationwide are encouraged to contribute. The former president is the honorary chair of Patriot Golf Day weekend.
"People all across America can play golf this weekend and support the children of our vets," he said. "It's a noble and worthy cause."
Calhoun has three young children, who will all get money when they reach college age.
"That gives me peace of mind to know that even though I was injured serving our country, I am able to provide for my children," Calhoun said. "So, for me, it's fantastic doing this."
But, it only works if people give. There are more than 20 participating courses in North Texas alone. s.
Since its beginning in 2007, Folds of Honor has raised more than $5.3 million and distributed 1,163 scholarships.
