IRVING - "My best friend died, and I'm trying to deal with that," said Joshua Brent as he left the Irving Jail Sunday around 4:15 p.m.

The 24-year old nose tackle for the Dallas Cowboys was bandaged after suffering head, neck and wrist injuries in an early morning crash Saturday along State Highway114 in Irving.

The accident killed his passenger, Jerry Brown, Jr., 25, who was Brent's teammate, roommate and best friend.

"It can't get any tighter than those two. Simply can't,” said George Milner, Brent’s attorney. “The closest family he had was Jerry Brown."

The police affidavit states Brent was pulling Brown out of the overturned car that was on fire when police arrived on the scene. The affidavit also describes how Brent smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test. That led officers on the scene to conclude that Brent had been driving while intoxicated.

"That area of 114 is dangerous for anybody," Milner said. “It is not well lit. They keep changing construction. They keep changing those barrels."

Bail for Brent was set at $500,000 Sunday morning. Milner said the amount was outrageous and offensive.

"There's no asterisk on that felony bond schedule that says if he plays for the Dallas Cowboys it's 16 times what some other guys is." Milner said.

Brent's future in football is uncertain. His attorney sais Brent's main concern is the life that was lost.

“He wasn’t worried about the whole jail thing,” Milner said outside the courthouse. “He’s having a very difficult time understanding what has happened. Comprehending what has occurred and getting over the emotional…it’s a horrible thing if you understand how close they really are. It’s like he got in a car accident and his little brother got killed.”

This case could take some time before Brent's next court appearance. It starts with the Irving Police Department filing a case with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.
