DALLAS - Askari, the baby okapi born in December, started exploring his habitat at the Dallas Zoo this week.

As he is only three months old, he spends at least half the day in his barn but when he does venture out, he is curious and active, said zoo officials.

Askari, which means "warrior" in Swahili, can be seen along the Nature Trail in the Wilds of Africa.

The Dallas Zoo has an okapi breeding program; about 20 percent of okapi in zoos in the U.S. and Japan can trace their lineage back to the Dallas Zoo.
