HUTTO, Texas — Every year a national organization called American Mothers selects one mom from each state to be their Mother of the Year, and the 2014 Texas honoree is from the Austin suburb of Hutto.
Kim Jones is a mother of two who is battling Stage IV breast cancer, but she says disease does not define her. Kim Jones works for Dell, and is one of the honorary chairs for Race for the Cure.
"I'm completely honored," she said.
Tears streamed down her face as she accepted the award for Texas Mother of the Year. She said they are tears of joy.
"I thank my husband and my girls. I love them so much," she said.
Jones has been fighting cancer since she was first diagnosed in 2009.
"After multiple surgeries, radiation and countless chemotherapies, she continues to battle," said her husband, Ken Jones.
Kim had a double mastectomy to fight the disease.
At the end of April she will fly to Colorado to be considered in the competition for National Mother of the Year.
