HOUSTON — Harris County Sheriff’s deputies took a 27-year-old man into custody Friday after a SWAT standoff following a dispute over fireworks.
It happened in the 18800 block of Timbers Spring in northeast Harris County, near Atascocita.
A man told deputies that his neighbor, Michael Kuykendahl, became angry with him because he was still setting off Independence Day fireworks well into the wee hours of the morning.
He said Kuykendahl first threw a brick at him, followed by a couple of Molotov cocktails. That is when he called authorities.
”We went inside and I heard a thump, came outside and the roof was on fire,” said Jason Bergenn. “I was in shock, who throws a Molotov cocktail at someone’s house?”
When deputies arrived, Kuykendahl had barricaded himself inside his home with a woman and two young children.
SWAT officers were then called to negotiate the man’s surrender.
Kuykendahl finally gave up shortly before 11 a.m. He is now charged with arson.
Kuykendahl and his family said the neighbors set off the fire bombs themselves and police have the story all wrong.
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” said Kuykendahl. “It’s a misunderstanding.”
Police said Kuykendahl has a lengthy arrest record that includes criminal mischief and assault.
