DALLAS (AP) — Police in Dallas are planning to implement a new policy on chasing suspects by foot months after a suspect was killed during a chase.

The Dallas Morning News reports (http://dallasne.ws/W1Nbjd ) that a new policy is expected to go into effect sometime early next year. Officers will be told not to keep chasing multiple suspects if they are alone or lose their weapon. They will also be instructed not to split up to go after more than one suspect.

Chief David Brown tells the newspaper that he's asked different officers how they would handle a foot chase and gotten different answers.

The department decided to write a new policy after an officer shot 31-year-old James Harper during a July foot chase.
