Flu outbreak forces Sunnyvale ISD to close schools

On Tuesday Dec.12 and Wednesday Dec. 13, Sunnyvale Elementary, Sunnyvale Middle and Sunnyvale High School will be closed.

Sunnyvale ISD will close for two days due to the number of students and staff members with flu-like symptoms, the district announced Monday.

On Tuesday, Dec.12 and Wednesday, Dec. 13, Sunnyvale Elementary, Sunnyvale Middle and Sunnyvale High School will be closed.

The district will use those days to disinfect all school buses and spaces because of the increase in influenza cases, district superintendent Doug Williams said in a letter to the community.

Out of 700 elementary students, 85 were out sick Monday, giving the school a 12 percent absentee rate -- 2 percent is considered the norm.

"As the number of confirmed cases of influenza grows, it is important to increase health and safety protocols for each campus," Williams said.

All school-related activities on Tuesday and Wednesday are also canceled.

“Hopefully the kids that are sick can rest up and we won’t continue to pass this back and forth quite as much," Williams said.

The following is the district's statement, in its entirety, posted on their website:

Dear Sunnyvale ISD School Community,

After much consideration and based on Texas Education Agency Attendance Guidelines and the Texas Department of Health's best practices, Sunnyvale ISD has made the decision to cancel school for Tuesday, December 12 and Wednesday, December 13 due to the number of students and staff members exhibiting flu-like symptoms. Sunnyvale Elementary has seen an increase in the number of confirmed cases of influenza, as has Sunnyvale Middle School and Sunnyvale High School. As the number of confirmed cases of influenza grows, it is important to increase health and safety protocols for each campus, including disinfection of all buses and spaces. All school-related activities for Tuesday and Wednesday, including evening activities, will be canceled. We appreciate your support and patience as we work to ensure the health and safety of all Raiders. Please feel free to contact the SISD administrative offices at (972) 226-5974 with any questions.

Sincerely,

Doug Williams
Superintendent
Sunnyvale ISD
