Heroes Milestones focuses on milestone events in a child’s life that due to a cancer diagnosis might go uncelebrated. The idea was to create a social assistance program to provide milestone parties for children with cancer whether they are in the hospital and can’t attend or they are at home and can’t afford to celebrate the milestone. Examples of Heroes Milestones events would be graduations, birthdays, Quincenaras, or Celebration of Life parties. Heroes Milestones helps celebrate the milestones in the child’s life by assisting with planning, presents, and making everything possible so that these memorable events happen.
History of Heroes Milestones
Heroes Milestones was created by HFC's past Program Services Coordinator, Christi Disch, in memory of her friend Kira. Kira was diagnosed with cancer just before her high school graduation. Unable to attend her own graduation, Christi and friends brought a graduation party to her! In her memory, Christi created Heroes Milestones, to help cancer patients celebrate the milestones in their lives. Heroes Milestones helps bring the celebration to the family in the hospital, or assist with finances if they do not have the means to pay. The celebrations can include birthday parties, Quinceneras, proms, graduations, and even Celebration of Life parties for a dying child. This program will continue Kira's legacy by helping other children find happiness in celebrating their milestone events.
Nathaniel’s Mission to Leave a Legacy
Nathaniel and his family were the first Heroes Milestones recipients. Nathaniel, a 14 year old from Humble, Texas, battled cancer from the time he was 5. As a final celebration of Nathaniel's life, Heroes Milestones provided him with a shopping spree to purchase mementos for his family, engraved with his name on it, a noble mission to fulfill to leave his legacy. Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Nathaniel’s favorite restaurant, provided the family and friends with an evening to remember, with a fabulous catered meal and even a fireworks show provided by Phoenix Design Group!
Tresman’s 17th Birthday
In January 2009, Heroes Milestones provided Tresman with a 17th birthday. His birthday was a HUGE milestone, because a year ago he was told he wouldn’t make it to see 17. Tresman is the epitome of Hope.
“This was one of the most memorable birthdays I have ever had. I’m thankful guys like you, care about the terminal children like me. Sometimes we’re left behind or not included in certain things. In Waco, I’m called “The Face of Hope”. It’s Heroes for Children who gives me that hope. Thanks once again.
I was diagnosed in 2004 with a very rare cancer, but I am beating all odds. I wasn’t supposed to have seen the age of 17. I want to keep the hope alive- I still have to graduate 2010!
Tresman “Cancer’s Enemy”
Heroes for Children planned a Quinceanera for the Heroes Milestones program and provided a young woman with the Quinceanera of her dreams.
Jocelyn had been battling cancer for over a year at that time. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her knee. After the first 3 month round of chemo, she was then told that she needed to have a complete knee replacement to insure all of the infected bone was removed. The operation seemed to be a success. Following the surgery she had to proceed with 7 more months of treatment. If being in the hospital secluded from friends and family was not bad enough, during this time her mother who was already staying home from work to help take care of Jocelyn, had given birth to a little boy. While this brought joy to everyone, they soon found out that he too would have a life of ups and downs and struggles for he was diagnosed with Down syndrome.
Her family has been burdened with outrageous medical bills and was unable to plan a Quinceanera for Jocelyn. Heroes for Children, stepped in to provide Jocelyn with this great celebration for her and her family.
On May 31st Jocelyn had the opportunity to share her coming of age with everyone dear to her. She arrived with friends and family in a stretch limo looking like a princess! The room was filled with balloons and stars that lite up the room alongside Jocelyn, the superstar of the night! The evening was fantastic and such a huge success. A night that will never be forgotten!
Alexandra was diagnosed with leukemia a few days before her 3rd birthday. Through the Heroes Milestones program she was able to celebrate her 3rd birthday and be baptized all in the same day! To help little girls like Alexandra celebrate special milestones like this one, visit the HFC Friends Page.
The members assist in the coordination of and donations to special events for cancer patients as needs arise throughout the year. Heroes Milestones events are coordinated by the wonderful HFC Friends Women's Auxiliary. For more information on how to help with Heroes Milestones, please click here.
