CELEBRATE ART IN OCTOBER IN THE DALLAS ARTS DISTRICT ALL MONTH LONG, sponsored in part by Cadillac!

October is the one year anniversary of the opening of the Dallas Arts District ! To mark the anniversary, the Dallas Arts District is launching a multi-venue celebration, featuring free museum admission, special performances, and an outdoor party. Art In October celebrates the Dallas Arts District, as we launch a new season of performances, exhibitions, programs and events. Throughout the month of October, we will spotlight the organizations of the Dallas Arts District with a variety of events, including street performances, art activities and a few surprises along the way.

The Dallas Arts District Announces “Art In October”

 

A Month-Long Celebration of the Dallas Arts District

October is a significant time for the Dallas Arts District; it is the anniversary of the opening of both the AT&T Performing Arts Center and the Nasher Sculpture Center, the start of the seasons for many of the performing arts organizations, and the opening of new museum exhibitions.

“’Art In October’ is a celebration of the Dallas Arts District, spotlighting the district’s organizations, venues, and programs with a variety of events, including street performances, art activities, and a few surprises,” says Veletta Forsythe Lill, Executive Director of the Dallas Arts District. “We wanted to create a way to celebrate our unique cultural offerings and engage the community.”

Exhibitions during this time include: The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy at the Dallas Museum of Art, Revelation: The Art of James Magee at the Nasher Sculpture Center, and The Land Closest to the Sky: Photography by Marc Riboud at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.  The Dallas Opera commences their season with Anna Bolena and Don Giovanni and Dallas Theater Center opens with Henry IV.  The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents classical, family, and pop productions led by Jaap Van Zweden.

The Dallas Arts District organizations participating in this celebration include:  The AT&T Performing Arts Center, Booker T. High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dallas Center for Architecture, Dallas Film Society, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Opera, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Theater Center, Nasher Sculpture Center, and TITAS.

The Dallas Arts District is a unique, 68-acre, 19-block neighborhood in the heart of Downtown. A rare jewel, the District is a center of innovative architecture, world-class exhibits, exemplary cultural programming and much more. Operating under the umbrella of Downtown Dallas, Inc., a private nonprofit organization that serves as an advocate for Downtown Dallas, Dallas Arts District acts as an advocate, steward and representative on behalf of the

 

“Art In October” Spotlight Days throughout the month include:

 

October 2: Opening Celebration – The Dallas Arts District will celebrate the start of Art In October with free admission to museums, outdoor performances, tours, and other activities.

October 9: DanceAfrica – Dallas Black Dance Theatre will host the inaugural performance at the AT&T Performing Arts Center Annette Strauss Artist Square.

October 10: Membership Day – Discover the benefits of membership as the organizations of the Dallas Arts District welcome you to be a member for a day.

October 15: Museum Block Party – The third Friday of the month will bring the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Crow Collection of Asian Art together for a block party, with all the museums open until midnight.

October 22: Dallas Opera Opening Day – The Dallas Opera opens its season with Don Giovanni.

October 31 Closing Celebration – “Art In October” concludes on Halloween with costume-themed festivities.  Families are encouraged to come in their favorite costume and gear up for trick-or-treating. Admission will be free to the museums and there will be special behind-the-scenes tours, mask and costume-making activities, scavenger hunts and more.
