HOUSTON (AP) — Justin Verlander held Houston hitless through six innings yesterday as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Astros 9-0. Verlander allowed two hits and finished with nine strikeouts to help give the Tigers the four-game sweep. Carlos Pena got Houston's first hit in the seventh inning.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Driver scored in the 56th minute last night to give the Houston Dynamo a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Houston goalie Tally Hall stopped Landon Donovan's penalty kick in the 25th minute to help the Dynamo win a rematch of the last two MLS Cup finals. Houston also moved into a tie atop the Eastern Conference with Sporting Kansas City, New York and Montreal.
THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Esteban Toledo became the first Mexican winner in Champions Tour history yesterday, beating Mike Goodes on the third playoff hole in the Insperity Championship. The 50-year-old Toledo finished with a 5-under 67 to match Goodes and Gene Sauers at 6-under 210. Goodes shot a 72 and Sauers, who was eliminated on the second playoff hole, had a 74.
