JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals brain trust will be together a few more seasons. GM John Mozeliak (MOHZ'-lee-ak) has been given a three-year contract extension and the club also picked up the 2014 option on second-year manager Mike Matheny (muh-THEE'-nee), who guided the Cards into the playoffs in his first season succeeding Tony La Russa.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Oakland Athletics will be without closer Grant Balfour for most of spring training. He's facing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks.

VIERA, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper arrived early at the Washington Nationals' spring training camp and joined manager Davey Johnson is declaring the Nats goal this season is the World Series. The 20-year-old Harper, the NL's rookie of the year, is expected to move to left field now that the Nats have acquired center fielder Denard (deh-NARD') Span from Minnesota.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have signed left-hander Rafael Perez to a minor league contract with an invite to major league camp. Perez pitched just 7 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Cleveland Indians last season because of shoulder problems.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Devils left wing Dainius Zubrus (DAYN'-ee-uhs ZOO'-bruhs) has had surgery on his left wrist, and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He's missed four games since suffering the injury against the New York Rangers.
