Electric cars are growing in popularity.
For shorter trips, or for folks who can charge up at work, electric cars are a great option and federal tax incentives can knock up to $7,500 off the purchase price.
Among 2012 electric cars, the new Mitsubishi MiEV leads the pack for fuel efficiency and cost. It will set you back about $30,000 before tax savings, but it gets the electric equivalent of 112 miles per gallon.
As with all pure electric vehicles, the MiEV's downside is range; it can only travel about 62 miles before you'll have to find a place to plug it in for a recharge.
