BERKELEY, California — Berkeley is known as a hippie haven, where environmentalism is part of the communal mindset.

Two Berkeley-based architects — Karl Wanaselja and Cate Leger — have taken recycling to another level. They've built their mostly solar-powered home out of recycled materials.

The upstairs siding is made from the roof panels of 104 junked cars.

The deck is salvaged redwood.

Glass awnings on the front and rear are all salvaged Dodge Caravan side windows.

And their work studio is made from a recycled shipping container.
