Plano-based Frito Lay is best known for its potato chips and Doritos. Now it hopes to become a leader in the world of sustainable energy.
Earlier this week, corporate officials unveiled a "near net zero" facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. It produces most of its own energy and gives off very little waste.
The plant features 18,000 solar panels, which generate enough energy to power 860 homes a year.
Solar concentrators help cook more than 500,000 potatoes into Lay's and Ruffles chips every day.
The plant's waste oil is used to produce additional heat and power. And it has also installed a special water recycling system.
The company says the system can potentially keep 99 percent of all its waste out of landfills.
