1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon pepper
A dash of salt
1 1/4 cups milk
3/4 cup (or more to preference) of shredded Gruyere cheese
3 medium potatoes (1 pound)
2 cups chopped fully cooked ham
1. Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole; set aside. For sauce, in a small saucepan cook onion and garlic in margarine till tender but not brown. Stir in flour, pepper and salt. Add milk all at once. Once warm, stir in the shredded cheese. Cook and stir over medium heat till thickened and bubbly.
2. Thinly slice potatoes. Place half the sliced potatoes in the prepared casserole. Then pour in most of the ham. Cover with half the sauce. Add another layer of potato, ham and then cover again with sauce.
3. Bake, covered, in a 350 degree oven for 40 minutes. Uncover and back about 30 minutes more (or until potatoes are tender.)
Makes 4-6 servings.
