Recipe to Serve 4
        
The Ingredients
 
                                               
1 cup milk
1 bay leaf
 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
 Salt to taste
 Ground white pepper to taste
 Grated fresh nutmeg to taste
 1 cup of heavy cream
 1 pound potatoes, peeled and sliced very thin
 1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half
 2/3 grated Gruyere cheese
 1 clove of garlic finely chopped
            
 
The Method
 
Boil milk with bay leaf in saucepan, taking care not to let it boil over.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Add 3 tablespoons butter, salt, pepper, grated nutmeg and cream with the hot milk.
Butter a gratin dish with 1 tablespoon of butter and add the chopped garlic in the bottom on the dish.
Add the thin sliced potatoes and cover each layer with the creamy mixture and sprinkle with a little of grated cheese, repeat for each layer.
Bake potatoes for 40-45 minutes. If surface of potato is not browned sufficiently, place under broiler for about 3 minutes.
Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
