Schools, local elected officials, businesses and others across Texas are invited to show their support for the students of Generation TX by doing one simple thing: wearing their favorite college t-shirt on GenTX Day (Friday, May 4th).
In 2000, Texas set a goal of increasing the number of students participating in higher education by 630,000 students by 2015. Currently, only 56% of Texas high school graduates enrolled in higher education in 2010. This remains well below the national average of 70%. Research shows that First Generation students (students whose parents did not attend college) are less likely to enroll in higher education, and that these conversations can be particularly critical in showing them that college is a possibility for them.

NIGHTFIRE by Lisa Maria Rice (Romantic suspense)
Avon Books associate editor Amanda Bergeron explains: “A tortured hero drawn to an innocent heroine: He knows he shouldn’t touch her/involve her in his world, but she makes him lose all vestiges of self-control. As much as he tries he can’t stay away. In her innocence she drives him to the edge, without realizing she has this power over him. There’s also the emotional element of her desire of him and her eventual ability to ‘change’/ ‘save’ him.” This is a common trope in erotica – in fact, Lisa Marie Rice is an internationally bestselling erotica authors who is famed for her steamy, angsty, passionate tales, such as NIGHTFIRE; HOTTER THAN WILDFIRE; INTO THE CROSSFIRE, which all feature ex Special Forces ops (Navy SEAL, Marine Force Recon, Delta Force). May Chen, editor at Avon Books, says, “Lisa Marie Rice’s heroes are all tortured and damaged, either from war or from a traumatic childhood/. They look to a young, relatively innocent young woman to make them feel new and whole again.”

CIRCLE OF DESIRE by Carla Svrafford and ENSLAVE by Cathy Yardley (Spicy/ in the vein of SHADES OF GREY)
Bergeron notes, “As recent media coverage points out, the feeling of giving up control, being dominated in bed is a fairly common female fantasy. Most women would never really want it played out in a ‘Red Room of Pain’ fashion; but the fantasy is there…even if it is taboo.” Women are talking about this as they share their reading experiences – these are women who might have just finished The Help in their reading groups, but erotica is offering a titillating peek into another feminine vantage and a practice that may be wildly divergent from their own affairs. Cathy Yardley’s ENSLAVE also features a tormented, scar-ravaged hero’s obsession with a younger beauty who sacrifices herself to his BDSM fantasies. This modern take on a classic fairy tale is still exciting readers, and is a perfect follow-up read to 50 Shades of Grey. Domination fantasies are more common than one might think in erotic fiction – Avon Impulse recently published new author Carla Swafford (a “slush pile find” – this gem of a manuscript was submitted, without an agent, through the Avon Impulse website). Swafford’s first book, CIRCLE OF DESIRE features a tough heroine who has never liked being dominated until she meets the hero…yet because of their jobs (agents at rivaling assassin organizations), they're forced to work together and wind up discovering an emotional connection that further ignites their physical chemistry.
