DR SHERON PATTERSON/ RELATIONSHIPS EXPERT
Defined- envy is a resentful emotion that occurs in the presence of someone else's success. We can experience envy in a host of situations such as class reunions, family gatherings and even conversations with friends.
Here are four pointers.
Comparing yourself to others is a guaranteed pathway to envy. There will always be someone smarter than you, more accomplished than you , or richer than you.
Resist the temptation to say " this person has more than I do." This negative thinking puts you down continually. Why poison your own well?
2. Take another look at your reality. Ask yourself - is it really that bad? Are you exaggerating? Sometimes we sell ourselves short. Envy causes us to skew the way we see things- ie. Is the glass half - or half empty ? Make a list of all the positives in your life, the big and the small things. Consider starting a gratitude journal. Each day write down the good things in your life.
3. Find your enough- otherwise, you will never be at peace with who you are and what you have. Self- satisfaction is a key to overcoming envy because you approve of you.
Don't focus on things about you that are beyond your control. Stop thinking and talking about your problems.
4. Convert envy into motivation. Don't be a hater- one is angry over another's success. Be a congratulator - one who celebrates others. When you encounter persons who excell in your area of interest, engage them in how they did it, and learn from them to make similar achievements.
