RHINO RUN
The bulky behemoth with short, thick legs does not look like it can run fast, but rhinos have been clocked at speeds of up to 45mph in the wild. Fortunately, you do not have to outrun Moyo, our black rhino. He will watch the race from the comfort of his home in ZooNorth. But you can help support conservation of these endangered species by running around the Zoo on a 5K race or ambling through the park with our herd of babydoll sheep on a 1K family fun run. Guests are encouraged to add to the fun and dress as their favorite animals. All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Dallas Zoo’s Conservation Fund. Members of the Dallas Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) raised $16,417 by hosting Bowling for Rhinos and Sailing for Rhinos in 2012, and Running for Rhinos in 2011 – placing second only to the San Diego Zoo this year. Registration in the race includes a t-shirt and full-day admission to the Zoo so participants can enjoy the rest of the day at a slower pace.
The always formally-dressed African penguins will kick off the race with a waddle. The 5K race starts at the Zoo entrance at 8:15 a.m. and the route travels along roads around the Zoo perimeter and concludes at Cat Green in ZooNorth. The family fun run begins at 8:00 a.m. and the course remains inside the Zoo. Family, friends, and spectators will celebrate at the end of the race with a party, awards ceremony, and animal presentation as well as drawings for door prizes.
Pre-registration cost: 5K Race- $30 pp; 1K Family Fun Run- $20 pp. Day of event cost: 5K Race- $35 pp; 1K Family Fun Run- $25 pp.
When registration begins until the end of the race, the Dallas Zoo’s Green Team and Luke’s Locker will take your donations of used tennis shoes to donate to the needy or send for recycling.
