North Texas Teacher Creates Game to Help Children Improve TAKS Scores

WHO: Janice Stahl, a teacher with more than 30 years of classroom experience, helped a North Texas
low- performing elementary school become recognized by the Texas Education Agency with a
new board game and flash cards.
WHAT: The TAKSkidstm School House Game and flash cards were created as a result of a challenge given
to Stahl by a student she was tutoring. She was prepping the 11-year old boy for the Texas
Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKStm) test, and he had grown tired of the worksheets he
had been given to practice. “Can’t you make this fun?” he asked.
WHY: The TAKStm test helps teachers determine how prepared students are to go on to the next grade
level. Children are often not allowed to move up to the next grade level if they do not achieve
            passing scores.
HOW:  Stahl decided that students needed another method of preparation. Many teachers only use
worksheets with sample problems to help prepare their students. Stahl collaborated with experts
in Math and Science to develop the TAKSkidstm School House Game and her flash cards, known as
Math Stretchers and Science Stretchers, in order to help children learn in a fun and creative way.
“My game may seem like other well-known board games to third, fourth and fifth graders, but it’s
dramatically improving their scores in Language Arts, Math and Science,” Stahl said.
MORE: Educators commend the game because it helps promote hands on learning and critical thinking
skills. Bea Cantu, former principal in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD said, “Our children enjoyed
playing the game. In just two years our school went from a low-performing to a recognized
school.”  Many parents have also purchased the game. Holly Cox bought it for her daughter who
is in the fifth grade. She failed the Math portion the first time she took the TAKStm test, but
improved dramatically after using the game. “I am proud to say that she not only passed the test,
she only missed a few questions!”
