The Junior League of Dallas is thrilled to announce one of its new community initiatives, Kids in the Kitchen, a program aimed at empowering youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. Supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its members, the Junior League of Dallas is one of more than 200 Leagues across the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico and Canada implementing this program in their communities.
The Junior League of Dallas will be partnering with the Lakewest, Town North and Lake Highlands YMCAs to implement Kids in the Kitchen and extend its benefits to more than 400 youth ages 5-12. Kids in the Kitchen sessions will take place at the Lakewest YMCA during their after-school program. Kids in the Kitchen consists of three-hour sessions Monday through Thursday for 12 weeks, during which participants will learn about healthy recipes and food preparation, partake in fun exercise activities, and receive take home packets with information about nutrition and fitness tips for the entire family.
The 2009-2010 Kids in the Kitchen program will culminate with a Healthy Kids Day on April 17th at the Lakewest YMCA. On this day, community members will be encouraged to bring their families to experience healthy snacks and activities, as well as live children’s entertainment and special take-home kits with information about living a healthy lifestyle.
“We are thrilled to bring this incredible program to the Dallas community, and hope to have the opportunity to expand it in the future,” said Meredith Camp, President of the Junior League of Dallas. “Since its inception in 2006, the message of the Kids in the Kitchen Program has reached millions of people, and we look forward to continuing to spread the message and fight the spread of childhood obesity through engaging education and fun activities.”
The Junior League of Dallas is a diverse organization of philanthropic women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Each year the Junior League of Dallas donates in excess of $1 million and 120,000 volunteer hours to the Dallas community in six areas: arts and cultural enrichment, education, family preservation, health, poverty intervention and violence. The Junior League of Dallas is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which is made up of 294 Junior Leagues in four countries.
