around the Christmas tree.
On Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 3:00pm – 5:00pm, the Austin Street Center, located at 2929 Hickory
Street, Dallas, TX 75371 is asking volunteers and donors to come together in the holiday
spirit to help the homeless of Dallas by bringing wheeled luggage, duffel bags, clothing
and toiletries to the center. “There is always an uptick of contributions and donations during the
holiday season,” says Patton Chapman, Director of Development for the Austin Street Center.
“We want to educate the public that homelessness does not just occur during November and
December--it is a year-round challenge. “, he adds.
Wheeled luggage and duffel bags top the list as the most-needed donations.
Many of the clients at the Center carry all of their belongings in black trash bags that are
often duct taped together. Besides being difficult to distinguish one bag from another, the trash bags
are also difficult to carry around. Wheeled luggage and duffel bags can help ease the Austin
Street client’s burdens, as well as help to simplify storage of their goods at the Center.
The Center is also requesting the following items for their
Christmas in July donation drive:
- Gently-used clothing
- Men’s Big & Tall Clothing
- Personal hygiene products for both men and women
- Men’s shoes (size 10 and up)
- Laundry bags
- Underwear and socks (for both men and women)
- Women’s Plus-Size Clothing
It seems fitting Blue Bell is participating in this event since July is also National Ice Cream Month.
Blue Bell brought back one of their favorite Holiday flavors,
Christmas Cookies to be available in stores only during the month of July. “When we heard about this
meaningful event to help the homeless called Christmas in July, it seemed a perfect match to come help
reward donors with an ice cream flavor suited for the event’s theme and in line with our
philanthropic projects we always do during National Ice Cream Month,” said Jerry Ferguson,
branch manager of Blue Bell Creameries Mesquite branch.
