GEOFF GODSEY/ FUN FOR 5: 5 ITEMS EVERY FAMILY NEEDS TO KEEP HEALTH AND ACTIVE
 
 
 
 
Item #1: Hula Hoop - Everyone should own one of these.  There are so many exercises or drills you can do w/ a hula hoop so I want to encourage people to be creative. 
Item # 2 Frisbee – These are great and something easy and fun that everyone can get involved in.
Item #3: Jump Rope - What a great piece of equipment that you can purchase for less than $5, fits into a briefcase, bag or purse, and can be used by the whole family. Jumping rope improves cardio-respiratory function while strengthening your muscular skeletal system at the same time. Using a jump rope for 15-20 minutes will burn enough calories equivalent to eating your favorite candy bar.
Item #4: Cones – Another great piece of equipment that is inexpensive, easily transportable and allows for unlimited opportunities with a little creativity. You and your kids can improve your overall athleticism by doing some simple cone drills.  Easiest way to get started is place the small plastic cones in various positions around a court, field or area where you have some space. You can run, walk or jog from cone to cone in a pattern conducive to improving speed, agility/balance, power and endurance.
 
Item #5:  PVC Toy Ball (Minimum 2) – This is probably my personal favorite of any of the items in the Fun-for-Five.  There are so many things you can do and they are great for the kids. 
 
Tips to make the Fun-for-Five work for YOU!   
 
1. Be creative – There is NOT a best way to use or do any of this stuff.  Have fun and be creative.  Do things that you and your family will enjoy.
 
2. Keep it simple – If you have never jumped rope before or done any kind of agility drill… don’t go find the most complex or challenging example you can find on the web and try it.  Keep things simple and be realistic.  Give yourself and your kids and chance to get comfortable with trying some new things.
3. Have FUN! – Make sure whatever you have put together for the family or whatever it is your doing… is fun.  You do not have to incorporate or use ALL 5 items all the time.  It’s ok to let the kids put together a drill(s) with the items as well.  Let them be in charge of creating a drill or two they want to do.  That begins to let them be in charge of their own activity level and empowers them to think about what they are doing to stay healthy…and I would note… whatever they come up with… make sure you don’t it with the same effort you apply to the drills you create… no matter how silly. 
 
Remember… it’s not what you do… it’s how you LIVE!
