DALLAS - Tax Day has arrived and many have made it a tradition of journeying to the United States Post Office to drop off their tax returns or extension letters.

For those who wait until the very last minute to even up with Uncle Sam or file for an extension, they may have to travel further to put those important documents in the mail.

Traditionally post offices across North Texas stay open until midnight and offer curbside drop-off service to last minute filers. That will not happen this year.

“We understand that many of our customers are now using online services to process their online returns,” said McKinney Boyd, a spokesman for the United States Postal Service. “With that - and along with the US Postal Service losing $25 million - we find that it is better for our organization to provide this kind of central service to many of our customers.”

This year the main post office is the only center that will remain open until midnight in North Texas. The window that provides person to person service will close at 10 p.m. The self service center in the lobby of the post office will remain open throughout the evening for purchase of stamps.

The main post office is located in Dallas at 401 Dallas Fort Worth Turnpike. That is at the intersection of Interstate 30 & Sylvan.

Other post offices will close at the regular posted time or at 10 p.m.
