Doomsday has been on a roll this movie season, from "Oblivion" to "After Earth" to "World War Z" to "Man of Steel."

There's even been a comic turn in "This is the End."

The end of the world is en vogue, and it's exhausting. Now, just add water.

"Pacific Rim" is an an ode to classic sci-fi monster films. Giant sea creatures called kaijus make Godzilla look like a gecko! They're bent on wiping out the human race — and doing a pretty good job of it.

Master of fantasy Guillermo del Toro directs his original story.

How to defeat these enemies? Build robot hunters called jaegers, 25 stories high! Human pilots operate them from inside, working in tandem — their minds linked.

Charlie Hunnam plays one of those hot-shots: Idris Elba, the commander, who sees some action himself.

Rinko Kikuchi provides female energy. Yeah, you need some of that in a movie like this.

Add comedy from Charlie Day and color from del Toro's old "Hellboy" Ron Perlman and you've got yourself a character-driven spectacle.

As for the end of the world? Hey, there's hope!
