GARLAND - DART riders were taking in that "new bus" smell Monday. The first of an entire fleet rolled out, and News 8 was there for the ride.

It was the first on one of the energy-efficient, 40-foot buses leaving the downtown Garland station early Monday morning.

DART has ordered 459 new buses to replace current ones over the next two to three years. The buses are more aerodynamic, have larger windshields, have new security cameras throughout the vehicle, and include lower floors to help disabled passengers.

Long-time riders told News 8 Monday they are happy to see the update.

The fleet is part of a bigger money-saving plan. The new buses are fueled by compressed natural gas, which costs less than liquefied natural gas currently in use. DART hopes to cut its yearly fuel costs by two-thirds.
