The notorious Austin-based cinema chain Alamo Drafthouse has now slapped a formal opening date on the proverbial marquee of its first North Texas location: August 16.

The seven-theater cinema, located in Richardson at 100 S. Central Expressway, will hold a smattering of events ahead of its grand opening. On July 13, Alamo begins its free outdoor summer series with a screening of Austin director Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused. On July 20, they'll screen the Lost Boys and The Goonies on July 27.

The theater will have its soft opening from August 8-11, offering half priced food and $2 movie tickets. On August 12, 13 and 14, it will offer discounted food ahead of its grand opening.

The Austin chain grew to prominence by elevating the movie experience into one that, chances are, is devoid of typical moviegoing annoyances like chirping cell phones and chatty audience members. And many of its high-profile frequenters, including former Gov. Ann Richards, filmed promos threatening to kick out loudmouths. These shorts run as pre-roll before the film instead of the myriad advertisements that play at other cinema chains.

Why, the Drafthouse folks just released a new one with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, stars of Linklater's upcoming Before Midnight.

It's this sort of attitude that's helped the chain carve out an international reputation, earning TIME Magazine's Best Theater in America tag. The theaters offer craft beer, a well-rounded menu and the frequent special movie events. The Richardson location won't even have the front row of seats –– "NO ONE wants to sit there," a spokeswoman says in a release.

The Alamo Drafthouse here will have seven theaters that sit 820 total viewers, including one room with a 60 foot screen, the largest in the chain.

Alamo has locations in Austin, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, New Braunfels and San Antonio. It also has theaters in California, Virginia, Michigan, Missouri, Colorado and New York.
