DALLAS — Tens of thousands of people packed Victory Plaza in downtown Dallas Saturday night for the fifth annual Big D NYE spectacular.
The free event next door to the American Airlines Center and on the doorstep of WFAA's studio featured musical entertainment and food leading up to the new year at midnight and what ws billed as the biggest fireworks display in North Texas, lighting up the sky for miles around.
Unusually fine weather for the end of December encouraged a large initial crowd that swelled with more than 18,000 happy Dallas Stars fans following the team's 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins, the best team in the NHL.
Dallas police estimated that 30,000 people attended the event, which was televised live on Channel 8 and also to a regional network of stations in other cities.
There was one arrest for aggravated assault of a public servant. The officer was taken to Baylor University Medical Center with a head injury, but was reported in good condition.
Five people were arrested for public intoxication and one was taken into custody for panhandling.
