Mary was a shy 11-year-old girl when I met her on assignment for Wednesday's Child in 1993.

She was adopted shortly after our taping and is now a 29-year-old wife and mother.

Mary is happy now, but she admits it took her a long time to grow up.

In 1993, Mary was a little girl with a big dream: Finding a forever family.

A few months later, Mary was jumping for joy when a childless couple from Willow Park adopted her. Mary looks back at those early years, leafing through a scrapbook she put together for her new mom and dad.

"When you decided to adopt me, it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me," she wrote in the scrapbook. "It was the happiest time of my life. I also want to thank you for everything you've done for me."

Adoption meant birthday parties, vacations and holiday get-togethers, family events that were all new to a little girl with dark secrets.

Mary tried to put behind her old life, a life of unspeakable abuse. But, old insecurities resurfaced... and she rebelled.

"I was real happy but didn't want to share a whole lot," she said. "I was 18, 19, trying to belong, found the wrong crowd, lived with a boyfriend."

Mary ended up in an abusive marriage. She had two sons and wound up losing custody of both.

"I don't know if I was a bad parent, but I made decisions that I could have made differently," she said. "I would say I had a lot of growing up to do."

A new marriage, a new baby and a new church now fill Mary's heart with hope.

"I think it's been great," said husband Keith Scott. "She's opened up, she's a lot less... I think it's helped a lot."

"I'm happiest when family's together and everyone is enjoying each other's company," Mary added.

She hopes to regain custody of her youngest son; her parents have custody of the other.

The family scrapbook still has plenty of pages upon which to write a new story.

Last Wednesday, Mary gave birth to her third child, another boy. Mom and baby Michael are home and doing fine.

And an update on Army Spc. Damien Jones who you met earlier this month in another Wednesday's Child follow-up report. Damien's young wife Priscilla has thyroid cancer and underwent surgery last Monday.

We wish the best for both families.
