One in 88: The Untold Story

Nine year old Sophie Belloni twirled a string as her father detailed life with his daughter. Sophie has autism. She can’t speak but she can laugh. And she did during the entire interview… often looking up at her father, Jeff. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sophie represents the statistic that one of 88 children in the United States is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. She’ll grow up and become an adult with autism. The challenges of everyday life will increase.

Sophie’s challenges will also become society’s challenges. How will the school system handle the increase of children with autism? Will more diagnosed children be mainstreamed? How will teachers be educated to deal with the children affected? And what programs are available for these children once they become adults?

Below WFAA has collected stories from News 8, profiles of children with autism (Faces of Autism) and links to more information.
