DALLAS — The late Dallas civil rights leader Adelfa Callejo was remembered at a community memorial Tuesday night.
The event at the Dallas Latino Cultural Center featured relatives, a former law partner, and other community leaders who fought alongside Callejo to improve the lives of Latinos.
Callejo died Sunday of a brain tumor.
Her nephew, Michael Gonzales, remembered asking her why she never ran for public office.
"And she said, 'I don't need anybody's vote, and I don't need anyone's money, and with that I can be helping my people all the time, seven days a week,'" Gonzales recalled.
Viewing for Adelfa Callejo will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. The rosary is at seven o'clock.
The public is invited to a 10 a.m. Thursday funeral mass for Callejo at Cathedral Guadalupe in downtown Dallas.
