So, the Mavs paid Wes Matthews a huge contract last year. They were going to pay him a huge contract but then they paid him a huger one to make some point, and it doesn’t seem like it’s working out.

Then last year they decided not to keep Chandler Parsons. Good or bad, the only thing that annoys me about it is that people portray what they did as “not offering Chandler Parsons a max contract.” When you know someone is going to GET a max contract and you choose not to pay them that, you’re choosing not to hire them. That’s fine. Just don’t pretend like the guy should have known he wasn’t worth more money and not taken it.

Then they paid Harrison Barnes max money. Nothing Harrison Barnes has ever done has deserved max money.

They probably would have been better off beating Houston’s offer for Trevor Ariza a couple of years ago when they paid Chandler Parsons instead. Trevor is making like $8 million and he averaged 13 points, four rebounds and two assists last year on 42% from the floor and 37% from three. Barnes went for 12-5-2 on 46% and 38%, respectively. Not exactly worth the literally $15 million more they’re paying him per year.

And then there’s Dirk! Dirk should make whatever amount of money he makes. He’s not going to earn $20 mil a year, but then again it’s payment for services rendered.

Once you get past the fact that no one is making the right amount of money, it’s not such a big deal. Yes, this is probably the year the bottom falls out, and yes, the Mavs are probably going to be kinda bad. But, the problem isn’t that Wes and Harry are making too money -- it’s that Wes is currently playing horribly and Harry has shown no reason to expect he’ll keep his hot start going.

But they’re by no means bad players. Really, I mean they’re both okay scorers and plus defenders. You can do stuff with that, if you have some other players. They might not this year, but these are long contracts – for better or worse.

I guess what I’m saying is, you get in there and start thinking about what you have and not what the contracts look like, you might have some hope for the future. It might not happen this year, but then again the Mavs own their pick this year. So that’s not so bad either.

Try to enjoy it, I sez.
